In simple terms: User experience design focuses on how a product works for people across their complete journey.

UI and UX explained

User experience design focuses on how a product works for people across their complete journey. User interface design focuses on the visual and interactive layer they use. The disciplines overlap, but attractive screens cannot repair a confusing experience, and good research still needs clear execution.

The UX process

Designers investigate user needs through research, interviews and observation. They define problems, map journeys, organize information and create user flows. Wireframes make ideas testable before the team invests in polished visuals or development.

UI design and design systems

UI design uses typography, colour, spacing, grids, hierarchy and components to create clear interfaces. A design system documents reusable patterns and decisions so products remain consistent, accessible and easier to build across screens and teams.

Prototyping, testing and handoff

Interactive prototypes help teams explore behaviour and collect feedback. Usability testing reveals where people hesitate or fail. During handoff, designers provide responsive states, components, assets, specifications and explanations that help developers reproduce the intended experience.

How to build a UI/UX portfolio

Show the problem, research, alternatives, decisions, testing and iterations—not only final screens. Use Figma to create realistic case studies, explain constraints honestly and demonstrate how evidence changed the design. A few complete projects are stronger than many unexplained mockups.
